And to think, this was the “downsized” model.

10/10 would daily.
Say what you want about the performance, but there is nothing made today that’s as comfortable for eating up miles as these old boats.

The prior model looked like this:

it was almost a foot shorter than the ‘76 and had a lower displacement engine; the ‘76 had a 500 c.i. ( 8.2 liter V8,) the ‘77 dropped down to 425 c.i. (7 liter.)

There’s money to be made, but the current regime would rather grift.

guy in my shop class in high school had a 4-door in that color, was a hand-me-down from his great uncle. Nothing says Malaise Era barge like a floaty boat with a 7 liter, 180 hp engine.

My personal favorite...

Couldn’t be longer. Also works well with steer horns on the hood.
The replacement model was also quite handsome IMO.

Malaise or not, the 1976 Cadillac El Dorado was a pinnacle Murican car.

For gliding along on a 55 mph interstate without a care in the world, this was the thing.

and a lot of people don’t realize that beast is front wheel drive.

Aww, shit. It’s like I’m 5 years old
sliding across the back seat of my parents’ Coupe De Ville on every turn
again.

And enough torque to tow a house.

Or that a similar power train pushed these:

I miss my mom’s ‘77. It was white, with white leather interior and two doors so wide and heavy I’m surprised my 5 year old self could use them successfully. It was a glorious car.
I always k new when mom was arriving. Her car sounded so much different from the minivans everyone else seemed to have.

And this is the point everyone misses on these old cars. Sure it only made 180 hp, but it had 400 ft-lbs of torque to go along with it. They may not have been “fast” by today’s standards, but they had plenty of get up when called upon.

Yup. It wasn't going to win many drag races, but when the secondaries on that Quadrajet opened up, it was like the Hand of God shoving you in the back.
